From Local to International: The Gregory Aziz and NSC Story

Every now and then, a true titan of business comes along that completely changes an industry or brings a company from out of the shadows and into the limelight. One such person is Gregory James Aziz. Greg Aziz has worked to make several companies successful during his long career, and his knowledge of business and ability to read economic and industry trends makes him a force to be reckoned with. Aziz’s most recent acquisition, National Steel Car, shows just how gifted he is when he is given the ability to shine.

National Steel Car is a rolling stock and freight car manufacturing company located in Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1912 under the name Imperial Steel Car, this company saw its best days early in its history. However, when other logistics and trucking companies started to take over for the railroads, companies like National Steel Car received the brunt of the impact, seeing their sales decrease steadily over the next decade. This led to reduced spending on capital projects and a low-cost strategy being implemented. However, customers were soon finding the quality of these cars to be lacking, so they took their business elsewhere. Due to these business conditions and poor management, National Steel Car was on the brink of bankruptcy.


In 1994, Gregory J. Aziz came along to help save the company. He purchased National Steel Car with a single goal in mind. He wanted to work to change the strategy of the company and build one of the best rolling stock companies in North America. Greg Aziz first made sure that the new strategy was clear to all employees and customers. He made a statement that engineering and quality would now be the focus of the company. Even though they were losing millions each month, Aziz knew that the increased investment in quality would help to build a better sales base and create contracts with new customers. He invested heavily in new equipment and machinery to help increase the quality of the cars produced. He increased production capacity and hired more workers to keep up with the new demand. Aziz even went out of his way to make new relationships with suppliers and build on existing relationships with customers.

Now National Steel Car is an international company with customers stretching to all four corners of North America. The continuously give good results, and production is up over 400 percent from just 20 years ago. Thanks to Greg Aziz, National Steel Car has gone from a local plan to an international industry leader.


National Steel Car has been the recipient of several honors over the years. It has the rare distinction of winning the TTX Supplier Evaluation Committee awards and the ISO:90001 2008 certification for a consecutive 18 times. This organization values its workforce and considers them its most crucial element for success.
